In the fast-paced world of eCommerce, trends change every day. We looked over some frequent buzzwords, spoke with eCommerce experts and found which are here to stay and shape eCommerce’s future.

With each year online sales show significant growth and become more ubiquitous in both B2C and B2B sectors. The analysis predicts that, in 2019, eCommerce sales worldwide will hit $3.453B. Mobile technologies, more secure solutions and simpler payment methods will break another barrier for shoppers, thanks to which, in the following year, 6 out of 10 purchases will be closed through digital channels.

This is important information for businesses, as they’ll have to cross the mobile gap to shorten the distance between the high volume of traffic and low conversion rates observed among mobile users. Following trends is a good path to follow, as the majority of them focus on building relations with users, engaging them with unique and personalized content, and relying on data-driven and automated tools.

The most significant eCommerce trends in 2019:

2019 eCommerce takeaways

Long-term eCommerce investments

Business Intelligence, Big Data, CRM and Content Marketing are among the top trends in eCommerce for another year. Their presence shows the maturity and trust that eCommerce vendors put in these trends. Surely they can bring long-term business growth and revenue.

They also strongly influence other data-driven trends and drive their high-paced growth. This includes Conversational Commerce and the Internet of Things, which give us new opportunities to shape the future of the market.

Adjusting to new user behaviors

After the shift towards mobile devices, there is a huge need to adjust to the new behaviors of users and potential customers. The need is confirmed by the State of mobile-first eCommerce report which states that, with an average performance score of 35.66/100 points, the majority of eCommerce is not ready for their mobile customers.

First of all, it is crucial to adapt published content to mobile devices, as users spend a great amount of time on them. Some proven content marketing strategies include video and interactive content, building clear and short messaging and easy to tap buttons.

This should be followed by taking the mobile-first approach in eCommerce and creating content, online stores and other touchpoints for mobile devices first, and only then translating it to the desktop.

Closing the mobile gap

Taking the mobile-first approach is also the first step to closing the mobile gap mentioned before. By adjusting online stores to mobile device restrictions, you’ll start turning their engagement into mobile conversions.

Another step is conversion rates optimziation which is a long-term process and allows us to adjust to users’ continuously evolving needs. Many goals of optimizing conversion rates can be achieved faster by leveraging modern web technologies like PWA or AMP.
