We recently visited Meet Magento New York (#MM17NYC).  NYC is definitely one of the most important places in the world when it comes to eCommerce. You can really feel the beating heart of eCommerce when visiting, or just talking with people.

The organizers did a wonderful job choosing a classic theatre as the venue and providing interesting content and an open, friendly atmosphere so well known from all Meet Magento Events.

I visited some of the talks (probably less than 30% to be honest) but I made some notes :) What I noted, I’ll share below.

Phillip Jackson @philwinkle
(Ecommerce Evangelist, Something Digital)

was talking about new trends in eCommerce. “The End of the Checkout” (the title of the presentation) means that we will see more and more blended solutions in which  eCommerce processes will be not so visible to the customer, starting from very simple mechanisms like a one-click buy, and extending this idea to conversational commerce and auto-refillment. Philip introduced trends like: Passive commerce, Conversational commerce, Ambient commerce and On-demand commerce.

I especially liked it because in the Magento ecosystem we need more people who can get out of the Magento box and see what is going on from a broader perspective. Philip is that kind of man :) I would strongly recommend listening to his eCommerce Future podcast.

Kalen was talking about selling (basically doing business) as an independent developer. This was quite a fun and informative talk. Now is easier than ever to start your own project and just see what will happen. The biggest challenge for a typical expert/specialist is to implement a “better done than perfect” approach. The wise words from Kalen are below:

PS. Kalen does a really cool Mage-Talk Podcast. As one retailer once told me “He talks honestly about Magento” :)

Piotr Karwatka @piotrkarwatka (CTO, Divante)

was showing an open source Vue.js based PWA storefront for Magento. This is a very important project for us at Divante. So I’m not objective here :) You can find a full transcript of Piotr’s presentation at LinkedIn post:

was talking about Magento PWA Studio. They will be ready next year and this will be React based.  We also saw an interesting presentation about a React-based PWA Magento frontend from Jamie Maria Schouren CEO, Hatimeria BV). They have built one PWA shop already and now they are building a partially open solution from this custom project. They will be also ready next year.

was talking about one-click buying.  This famous Amazon patent is no longer valid and now all retailers can use this solution. Thanks to Creatuity we will be able to use the one-click buy mechanism in Magento.

Kimberly Thomas @magentogirl
(Practice Lead, Magento Services)

was talking about building a Global Architecture for Multiple Brand Deployments. She presented a kind-of template for a solution they recommended at Magento. This is a very common problem for larger companies. You can use the Magento Services Team approach and you can also get Magento involved to figure out the optimal strategy for the specific client.

Kuba Zwolinski @snowdog  (CEO, SNOW.DOG)

was showing an Omnichannel strategy they implemented for eObuwie – a fast growing, cross-border footwear retailer. He shared his knowledge of how they built mobile apps and interactive kiosks using the Magento API and native apps.


One word – Headless.

In presentations about PWA and eCommerce trends you can see that the headless approach is gaining traction. You can also see case studies of retailers who use this approach to build complex Omnichannel solutions. This is indeed the end of the checkout as we know it. Magento could be the Center of eCommerce but in the future, the majority of users will not see any Magento Frontend. They will just use multiple touch-points and eCommerce processes will follow.
